In 'Emotional Intelligence'
Daniel Goleman defines EQ and contrasts it with cognitive intelligence or IQ. Drawing on
extensive recent research by psychologist and scientists, the first book gathers
together evidence that establishes the significance of emotional intelligence and
positions its understanding as breakthrough in human understanding of ourselves. Of
even greater benefit is the indication that EQ, unlike IQ, can be developed.
'Working
With Emotional Intelligence' addresses the impact of EQ on business success. Contrary to
traditional thinking the evidence shows that IQ becomes less important the higher one
moves in an organisation. For some of the major companies studied, 90% of the competencies
considered key for chief executives, are EQ rather than IQ related.
Relating antidotes from
personal experience and business examples from hundreds of high level interviews, Daniel
brings the topic alive with rich insights for the reader. In a chapter headed
'Competencies of the Stars' he outlines EQ abilities under two main categories, Personal
Competence and Social Competence, then five subcategories, Self Awareness, Self
Regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social Skills. Each of twenty-five inter relating soft
skills are explained comprehensively, deeper in the book.
Of the first book I wrote "If you need to know what makes one person successful
and another not, this book answers the question." If you want to know the 'how', read
'Working With Emotional Intelligence'. This book explains the soft skills, essential to
business success, better than anything I have read to date.
